Medical Bell

For all the years I worked in the University Medical School I never noticed the bell, though, to be fair, I rarely used the main entrance near which it is located. However, I caught sight of it today as, during the extensive alterations to Bristo Square which block off the usual route, the only way to and from the Reid Concert Hall passes below.
According to this site the Medical School was built 1876-86  in Northern Italian Renaissance style, the planned large campanile, or bell tower, was omitted due to budget constraints and reduced to a small bell on the north side of the courtyard . Just who was to be summoned by the bell is unclear.

The lunchtime organ recital at the Reid was given by Oliver Hancock, included works by Buxtehude, Langlais, J S Bach, Brahms, Eben, Arne and Leighton, all most enjoyable, and though technically complex the latter's modern discords were less to our taste.

We followed this with a visit to the Primates Exhibition in the Museum until it was time to go home.
