Easby Abbey and the Parish Church of St Agatha

In 1152 the Constable of Richmond Castle granted the land
to a group of Premonstratensians - a small religious order
of canons. These were not monks but ordained priests who
could conduct ceremonies. The ruins of the Abbey on the
banks of the River Swale are of great scenic beauty and
have attracted the attention of many great artists including Turner. The adjoining Church of St Agatha which predates
the Abbey and is seen on this image escaped the dissolution
fate of the Abbey.
