Soft Box
Ah the holidays. Had a lie-in, walk on the beach, mooch about St Andrews and still time to build a DIY softbox. It has still got a bit of a hot-spot I need to work on, but happy with it for a first attempt.
Now I just need a more attractive subject to try it out on...
[Edit - for Anonymoose]
Strobist: Single SB900 in DIY softbox just to the right of camera on cable to retain TTL metering. Set camera to manual f14 and 1/200(to get rid of most of the ambient light). Flash metering auto TTL. Did a wee bit of post-processing to desaturate and smooth out my mottled skin tones.
The softbox is essentially just a plastic storage crate with the flash stuck through a hole in the base, and white cloth over the opening. This allows the light from the flash to spread out a bit before it is further diffused by the cloth - the idea being to create a softer more flattering light with less harsh shadows. The whole thing bolted to an old flash bracket and stuck on a tripod at head height. Think I need to add foil internally and/or another layer of cloth to reduce the flash hotspot (not really visible here, but obvious at full size in the catchlight in the eyes)
