Rhubarb

Ah. Rhubarb and custard, Rhubarb Crumble or Pie. What delicious thoughts the word brings to mind.
Rheum rhabarbrum is a herbacious perrennial. Its leaves are poisonous but the stalks are widely used to create deserts and preserves.
In the U. K. the best commercial rhubarb is grown in Yorkshire in the Rhubarb Triangle. Some of it is forced in low dark sheds and harvested by candlelight. Growing in this way is said to make it sweet and tender.
When I was 7 our house was in this rhubarb growing area. One summer night I was allowed to camp out on the back lawn. Being hungry in the night I crawled through the hedge and into the rhubarb field and scoffed a large stalk. Let us just sa I lived to regret it. It is best cooked.
Today we went to a huge garden centre. One of those which sells a huge variety of goods which you never knew you wanted. To be fair to them they had six varieties of Rhubarb and so Mrs.K. was able to buy new plants for our garden.
