red-crowned parakeet
The island of Tiritiri Matangi off Auckland was used for farming until about 30 years ago, when it was decided to make it a pest-free island and use it as a sanctuary for native New Zealand birds and other wildlife. Many thousands of native trees were planted and native birds were released, which have done well without predation from cats, rats and possums. The island has changed from farmland to forest really quickly.
These red-crowned parakeets were among the many special birds we saw there.
