The Black Friar

Came out of Blackfriars Station and turned right instead of straight ahead and came across this strangely shaped pub.

It's called the Black Friar and that black lump below the clock is a rather poor representation of said friar.  

Need to investigate the history, but interesting architecture.  I wonder what the buildings around it were like when it was built?
