White Heat

This is a view of the Daresbury Laboratory, a scientific research centre, which was opened in 1962 by the then Prime Minister Harold Wilson. His father had been an industrial chemist. In 1963 in a speech to the Labour Party Wilson successfully associated his government with the new technological innovations.

"We are redefining and we are restating our socialism in terms of the scientific revolution.... The Britain that is going to be forged in the white heat of this revolution will be no place for restrictive practices or outdated methods on either side of industry."

This morning, over breakfast, we were discussing those myths that our parents used to tell us. You know the kind of thing.

Don't stand in front of the fire or you will get chilblains.
Don't sit on the radiator or you will get piles
You will suffer radiation if you sit too close to the television (and square eyes if you watch it for too long)
Don't keep playing on your Gameboy or you will get arthritic thumbs.

What were your parent's favourites? And what myths have you told your children?
