Lithgow is a town which has seen more fortunate times. Nonetheless, for the most part, it cheerfully struggles on. In recent decades, a series of circumstances and unlucky geography has led to the loss of much industry and employment opportunity. Small business battles to survive and there are many social problems. It is a place which this country's present up-beat economy has largely overlooked.

On the other hand, all this has prevented a lot of destructive redevelopment which might otherwise have occurred. Lithgow features an unusual amount of period architecture and infrastructure. Coming to Lithgow is almost like stepping back in time.
