The Dark Spirit of Whitehaven

The Jefferson family is well known in Cumbria and beyond for their fine Rum which was produced with sugar from their estate in Antigua where no doubt they had many slaves.  As wine and spirit merchants the Jeffersons  traded from the same premises in Whitehaven for over two hundred years.  The family also had huge investment in shipping and railway development and at  one time owned  twelve sailing ships on routes from East India and the Caribbean.
