Always on Duty

This holiday is a winter sun trip, not really a wildlife watching trip. There isn't a great deal of wildlife on Madeira. I think we've seen about a quarter of the 30 or so land birds here. There are very few mammals: a mouse, a couple of rat species, feral cats, and a few myxy rabbits. Thankfully there are also relatively few insects (I say that only as one who is prone to getting bitten). There are a good number of species of whales and dolphins in the waters hereabouts, but sadly not too many at this time of year. Regardless, we decided on a sea mammal watching trip today aboard a catamaran. There had been a sighting of a Pilot Whale but sadly it wasn't to be seen today. We did get some nice sightings of Common Dolphins but it was relatively short and sweet. I really enjoyed the trip; Mr PB less so as he is not such a good sailor and there was quite a swell. One we got our feet back on dry land, we had a wander and a bit on lunch. There was a Little Egret in the harbour, which is apparently not that common here. I got a nice photo of it so I'm putting it in as an extra. My main photo is of one of the many lizards that we saw scuttling round one of the parks. They were even climbing up into the plants today. I find them delightful little creatures and could watch them all day!
