Upper Quinault - Side Channels

The upper Quinault River is a large river and very dynamic. Side channels like this provide key rearing habitat for juvenile salmon and also spawning blueback salmon (sockeye sub-species). The problem is, since the removal of the old growth forests and within the valley bottom and large wood within the channel the river migrates and erodes much faster and destroys (then recreates) these key habitat areas making it hard for all species of salmon to survive and reproduce productively. Hopefully we can help change that through the construction of engineered logjams and other management practices. The next round of ELJs are about to be constructed so we'll see how things go I suppose...
