HIDDEN HISTORY
Turning detective . . . this is the site of the station that served Rillington, although the actual village is almost one mile from here.
Built by the York & North Midland Railway in 1844, this image shows the line from York to Scarborough, which is still used today. Hidden behind the train is the spot where a branch connected Rillington to Pickering. Opened on 7 July 1845, the railway company offered free travel for the first five days on this branch line. Some of the original Railway Cottages can just be seen in the background, left of centre, in this photo.
