There is no such thing as ...
... poor weather when it comes to walking, only inappropriate clothing and we had the appropriate clothing and so headed out on a rather damp and misty day to follow the Loch Freuchie Circular starting from Amulree.
Just before reaching the head of the Loch we passed a ruined hamlet of 4 or 5 dwelling houses and farm buildings - giving a glimpse into times gone past when this area would have been a thriving community with many more households than today.
Some searching when I got back suggested some families moved from the area to Canada in 1730s but I also found five families living there in the 1861 census - mainly farmers, ploughmen and agricultural labourers with one mole catcher (aged 79) and a tailor. Some further searching beckons to try and discover when the cottages were abandoned - there still appears to be families there in the 1871 census.
The land was owned by the Marquis of Breadalbane.
