Does this Work?

I was reading in a Photographing article that if you take a photo with a branch very close to you, you could use it as showing depth because it would look transparent in front of your subject. So This Spotted Towhee was on the railing and one of my "perching branches" was close to me on the deck......I didn't move to get it out of my way. I am not sure I like this effect. But I liked the bright eye of the Towhee so decided to use this photo and ask you what you think.   I did lighten the photo because it was a bit of a dreary day.
