...Transforming Student Learning Through Embedded Tutoring in the First Year Writing Classroom

This was one of the best workshops I attended at the Student Success conference. Led by a Writing Instructor and Work Study Student Tutor from Lane Community College, they described a pilot program that provides writing supports in the classroom. This tutor is also available in the Writing Center or can work with students online.

The pilot has been very successful in helping students with authority issues, students afraid to ask the instructor for help and students unfamiliar with technology to receive the additional help they need to successfully pass basic writing and English composition courses.

Later on I attended the graduation ceremony for a friend who receive a certificate for completing an intensive 2-year Chinese healing arts program called Amma Therapy. She is in her mid-50's and is making a career change from web design to healing. It was very moving event with a dozen graduates. All of the graduates experienced 'transformative change' through this program.
