Stramongate Bridge

There are five road bridges that span the River Kent as it flows through the town of Kendal – three stone arch structures, an iron one that was erected to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee in 1887, and a modern one.

This is Stramongate Bridge - one of stone arched ones.  The original bridge is thought to date from the 14th century, although the middle section of the current bridge dates from the mid to late 16th century. In 1794, it was decided that a new wider bridge should be built.  However, the original bridge had been so well constructed that it was easier for it to remain in situ.  An additional single track bridge was built each side of the original 'pack horse' bridge to form the present one. 

When the water levels are low in the river, it is possible to see quite clearly, the boundary between the original medieval bridge and the two late 18th century additions ............................
