Glastonbury Abbey
'His iacet inclitus Artirius in insula Avalonia' ('Here lies King Arthur buried in Avalon!')
In 1191 the monks excavated the spot where according to hints and rumours was were King Arthur was buried. They dug down 16 feet to find an oaken coffin and at 17 feet a leaden cross with the above inscription. The coffin contained two bodies, that of a man and a woman and it was said to be King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere.
Now only a noticeboard marks Arthurs final resting place after it was vandalized in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. No one has seen or heard of what happened to the remains since.
Truth or hoax?
Of all the legends told to me as a kid, the legend of King Arthur and the magic of Avalon and Merlin was my favorite. Even now, I still watch films or even tv series made about them. So it was quite a treat to visit the places rumored to be linked to this legend. I felt like a kid again, lol. So truth or hoax? I don't really care. :)
