Finished at last.

About half way through I reviewed my thought that I had read the book before. I suspect I got half way through and gave up. 

Two magicians intend to bring magic 'back', one intends to share it and in doing so draws attention to himself so that his wife is abducted by a faerie. The other wants to keep it to himself which leads him to the crime of raising a woman from the dead thus betraying her to the same faerie. 

But all comes right in the end. Or nearly. After 1006 pages.
