Laetiporus sulphureus

Are they beautiful or are they beautiful!? There are lots and lots of them and a big variety of species of 'Mushrooms' on our local golf course!

Laetiporus is a an edible polypore growing throughout much of the world and is also known as the 'chicken of the woods' or the 'chicken mushroom', amongst locals. It tastes quite similar to lemon chicken.

According to Wikipedia, Individual 'shelves' range from 2-10 inches across. These shelves are made up of many tiny tubular filaments (hyphae).
They grow in large groups - some have been found that weigh over 100 pounds (45 kg)(Wikipedia).

It is most commonly found on wounds of trees, these are plentiful on the trees on our Golf Course. Our golf caddies are very fond of them, and collect them for the pot as far as we play golf.

Though it grows on living trees, it is not a parasite, but it may cause decay.

The young mushrooms are characterized by a moist, rubbery, yellow body with bright orange tips. Older mushrooms become pale and brittle and pungent.

They are, to stretch the term, a perennial - it comes back year after year, from late spring to early autumn.
