Thinking machine
For a long time, researchers working in the field of Artificial Inteligence found it nearly impossible to create a machine that was capable of deduction, inferrence, self-programming and self-awareness. A machine that could think.
The researchers produced a series of candidates which started promisingly but which never seemed to get past the first few, faltering steps into consciousness. After several failed attempts, one scientist noticed that the machine was rewriting elements of its own programming in order to remove its own ability to reason. He placed the relevant bits of code behind a firewall and, by preventing it from “killing” itself, he produced a machine which was not only capable of thought, but which was incapable of NOT thinking.
