Engagement Egyptian style
The glitz and the glam, the rock star treatment, the super loud music, and a similar routine for the wedding. Ushered in with smoke machines, strobe and coloured lighting, and deafening music. Seated upon a podium on regal-like chairs, rings exchanged and the dancing begins. The happy couple dance together then separate to dance, the groom to be with the group of men dancing together and the bride to be with the women. It's frowned upon to dance with someone from the opposite sex if you're not married. You may see shoulders, legs or uncovered hair, slightly less uncommon to at a wedding.
After what seems like an eternity of dancing and deafeningly loud music we stop for the open buffet, the stuff that legends are made of. Meat, cakes and if you're not quick, you miss out. Plates piled high, dessert on another plate, grabbed at the same time, a lot of which goes to the bins at the kitchen at the end.
And the dancing begins.
And in case you miss any of it, every move is filmed and projected onto screens.
No RSVP needed, just show up. Bring a friend.
So different to what I know. Fun, a little strange at times but love being invited by my students.
