Ruta de los Volcanes
Thursday 26th January 2017 (1615)
And now the finale. We stopped off at Monumento al Campesino, we had passed it yesterday without realising what it was. Then on into Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. A lovely drive through despite being on the wrong road! We eventually found the visitors centre and enjoyed the boardwalk out across the lava. It really put into perspective the devastation caused by the volcano. In the centre we were treated to a virtual volcano eruption.
We then made our way to the highlight, the ruta del los volcanes. Thankfully we just missed one coach which meant we were first on the next one and got the best seat at the front. The drive was spectacular and I found it quite spiritual. So many amazing views. Getting off the coach we were shown the spontaneous combustion of straw as it came into contact with the heat of the volcano and also the steam and geyser created when cold water was poured in.
We continued our own drive through the park, stopping at the camel train, although mum couldn't be persuaded to go on. We revisted Los Hervideros but the tide was going out and it was nowhere near as spectacular as yesterday. We also revisited El Golfo to see the emerald pool we had missed yesterday. A drive back through the park and a little detour completed the day.
