Smoke always rises vertically in very cold air

As expected, the temperature dropped to minus 25C this morning from around zero a day or two ago.  Smoke (in this image, steam) always rises vertically in very cold air. It's cold enough to ice up the river though it didn't seem as severe as this day did - probably because there was no wind to add to the chill.
