Dovecote (Doo'cot)
The farm land where this rebuilt dovecote stands was a recorded as a farm in the 17thc. I recall being told that the land owners were originally Dutch. Another bit of local history suggests than a cutting across this hill side is of Roman origin and was one of their 'Salt Lanes' from Wallsend (Segedunum Fort) on the Tyne down to Yorkshire. Being the highest point in East Durham another perpetuated myth is that the hill top (to the left) could be where the Lindisfarne monks rested St Cuthbert's coffin before adopting Durham as the chosen burial place. There are a few claims to this around the NE. if you Google it enough you'll probably find that Mary Queen of Scots slept here too.
