Faded Splendour

During the period of British Colonial rule in Burma, many splendid buildings were erected in the capital, Rangoon (now Yangon).  However, after independence and during the period of military government, there was little investment in infrastructure and many of these fine building fell into serious states of disrepair.  When the capital moved to Naypyidaw in 2006, government buildings in Yangon were left empty and fell into further disrepair.

Now, in the centre of Yangon, it is easy to find many buildings from the colonial era that look distinctly uncared for. The building in my blip was not, as far as I am aware, any government building, but the stone above one of the doorways bears the date 1918 and the style is clearly reminiscent of British administrative buildings of that time. It appears to be a residential block.

This image was taken during a final stroll around Yangon this morning, before getting a taxi to the airport for the long flight home.
