U-Bahn München: 85/100 Sendlinger Tor (U1/U2)
Munich Underground: 85/100 Sendlinger Tor (U1/U2)
The second visit to Sendlinger Tor underground station for my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series. After the blue upper level three weeks a ago, today's entry is about the lower yellow level, where the green U1 and red U2 (plus the green/red U7 and orange/red U8) trains stop.
The station was opened in October 1980, nine years after the upper level for the U3 and U6 trains, which it crosses almost orthogonally. The yellow level consists of two separate platforms for each direction, which are connected by a single 30 metres cross-cut. The escalators to the upper level platform is also located in this cross-cut, which leads to regular overcrowding during rush-hours at this important interchange station.
To address this issue, the whole station will be refurbished from spring 2017 to some time in 2021 (without shutting it down), with the biggest projects being the addition of another cross-cut, more exits to the surface, and new alignments of the escalators.
So, I barely managed to picture the stations in their original form.
