Bottle Kilns

I had a lovely walk along Portobello promenade.  I have to admit that I have never been to this part of the shoreline before in all of the many years I've lived in Edinburgh.  There are lots of old things to find.
These recently restored kilns are wonderful, and their juxtaposition with modern housing is nice.  They were built in late 18th century, and produced earthenware pottery such as ginger beer bottles, whisky flagons and hot water bottles.
The extra is a detail from the Coade Pillars. I learned something new - coade is a method of creating artificial stone ceramic using crushed flint which can be moulded before firing.
