Milton Keynes is 50 years old today. At least the designation of Milton Keynes as a new town is. I dragged Igor to the site of the concrete cows early(ish) this morning to take this birthday blip.
I’ve been here since 1970 and although three years had passed since the birth of the concept of Milton Keynes, nothing much had happened. The only thing to show that the new town was on its way were signs at the boundary stating “You are now entering the designated area of Milton Keynes”.
I’ve watched it grow. I’ve lived in various parts of it. I’ve brought my children up in it. I’ve taught in several schools in it. I’ve applauded many of its achievements. I’ve felt sad when new planners undid the work of the original architects. But most of all I’ve been happy here and plan to stay here for the foreseeable future.
Happy Birthday Milton Keynes.
The Concrete Cows in Milton Keynes, are an iconic work of sculpture, created in 1978 by the Canadian artist Liz Leyh. There are three cows and three calves, approximately half life size.
The Cows are constructed from scrap, skinned with fibre glass reinforced concrete donated by a local builder.
