Still Life with Pineapple
Did you watch the documentary the other night on 200 years of The Scotsman newspaper?
Well, it certainly stirred some memories with me, particularly of my first day at work in Edinburgh on the Evening News, when I got taken out for lunch by the Features Editor and his deputy.
They kicked off the meal with a “half and a half” half a pint of beer and slug of whisky, followed by several more.
Blithely ignorant of the macho male drinking culture I was stepping right into I ordered a pineapples juice.
They were stunned.
What had they done? Hired a pineapple-drinking journalist…
