Presents for Chickens?!
Such a beautiful morning - had to stop on the way to the allotment to see this view. Wasn't expecting to see Tibetan prayer flags to be honest! I rather like them fluttering on the washing line!
Major clean of the coop which meant taking the back off - I took photos of each stage and will be instigating a deep clean rota! I don't think anyone does anything remotely resembling a clean on their days so they can jolly well pull their collective fingers out and do it once a month each! I also gave the girls lots of treats hanging on ropes and a new toy! A yellow ball that you fill with seed - as they push it around the seed falls out! Should help to keep them entertained in their run! kept me entertained sitting inside the run with them!
I had less fun tackling the grass growing up my raspberry canes! Plenty of scratches to show for it! I also tackled the dead stalks of my Jerusalem Artichokes which are along the back of my old plot. Quite satisfying pulling the 10ft stalks out of the ground and breaking them up! There were loads of tubers too - I seleceted some of the biggest to take home and use in a dauphinoise and left some at the entrance to the plot with a note saying "Please help yourself if you like them or dare to!" They do produce a severe case of flatulence for most people! I find cooking them with summer savory helps but maybe i just have a peculiar digestive system and am not full of wind! ( the photo of them does look like a pile of .....!!!!)
I forget to say that sunday I got a message from Party Girls mum saying a fox had got 3 of their chickens. They heard them and the local birdlife making a racket and on going out saw the fox in with them. I have to admit I thought of Friend and how many times I had said to her that they were so at risk of being caught by a fox due to their insufficient fencing. I so missed not being able to say " I told you so" to her. They said they had not seen a fox for over 9 years - doesn't mean they are not out there, and as PG's mum said - if they had got them under cover as Defra requires they would have been safe. Made me so sad as I loved taking care of them and watching them wander down the narrow track to the lower area under the trees.
In the afternoon I potted up some bulbs, the Hemerocallis - Peruvian daffodils, I had ordered arrived whilst I was on the allotment and were waiting on my doorstep! So these and other bulbs from last year were thrust into pots whilst Tilly and Polly watched me through the conservatory!
I then received another parcel - a present from Lg9 who also loves birds! Imagine my joy when I found 5 pairs of socks with chickens embroidered on them! She gives the best chicken presents!
P.S. I am adding more rows to my scarf as no way is it going to be the stated length - should have done a tension square as rosiecatwoman suggested! The width is right but not the length - I think it's a mistake in the pattern! Particularly as i still have a whole skein yet to be made into a ball used and I only have 18 more rows to knit according to the pattern!
