Beautiful sunny day after a sharp frost. Took the dog out in the fields. It really felt as if we were in the Alps with champagne air and a bright sun with wall to wall blue sky. Later N and I drove to friends and we had lunch together at the Podymore Inn. Coffee later at their farmhouse where someone had rented one of their small fields for their troup of alpacas. They were very entertaining to watch striking extraordinary poses with their long legs and haughty expressions!
On our return home I took the dog for another run down to the farmyard only to find another large dog was following us in the twilight. Sure enough it was a foxhound having lost the pack. They were hunting down the valley earlier in the day while we were out. Tess didn't mind her at all which was very unlike her and the hound was so friendly and obedient. I tried to phone the hunt but only got the answerphone; then I heard the sound of the hunting horn up at the top, by which time the hound had disappeared again, so Tess and I raced up to the road to find the master had been looking for her and had found her and loaded her up with the others into the horsebox. He knew exactly which one she was and that she had been missing. The worst is when they lose hounds in a wood and the light falls.
