To coin a phrase

Visited the Deva Museum as my colleague Anca's brother and sister-in-law work there as archaeologists.

This county of Hunedoara is rich in antiquities. It contained important ancient centres of the Roman Empire and older Dacian civilisation, although these centres weren't the exact same place. The museum and its hordes of gold coins, bronze and other Roman era artefacts depicting animals only known to the Romans and not native in this corner of Europe really show the influence of the Empire.

On top of all this coinage, a local area around Hateg was at one time the only land mass for a few hundred kilometres and is a treasure trove for dinosaur bone discoveries. The world's largest winged dinosaur, with a span of 30 metres, was found here. Fossils of the extinct cave bear come from the region's numerous hills.

This sort of thing is why North Americans go gaga over the wealth of history in Europe.

Lots of the statues dating from the Roman era had been decapitated, I think as the subsequent rulers wanted to remove anything that depicted a face as having an association with Christianity.

Most of these statues were of females in flowing robes. So I ordered a 'Smash the Patriarchy' t-shirt as antiquity shows these issues just won't go away.

This is a church in Deva, not the Museum.
