Manifest: 10,000 hours | Artist, Clare Twomey

Centre of Ceramic Art | York UK

I'd not got round to visiting since the Centre opened in the much re-vamped Art Gallery. Gob-smackingly good. I'll be going back. A lot...

"The imposing tower, filled with 10,000 individually handmade bowls is Clare Twomey's response to York's collection of ceramics, echoing the obsessiveness of making and collecting pots.

The piece is a comment on the skill exhibited by the hundreds of artists represented in the collection. It also highlights the dedication demonstrated by the collectors acquired both objects and knowledge through their activity.

Individuals from across the UK have assisted Twomey in the production of the bowls. Each bowl took about an hour to make and represents one of the 10,000 hours it is said that it takes to master a skill.

This major new work is created by internationally renowned artist Clare Twomey (born 1968) and was commissioned to celebrate the opening of the Centre of Ceramic Art."
