Hatching a Plan........

Recently I've rediscovered John Steinbeck. Of course, everyone knows his big books, like East of Eden or The Grapes of Wrath, but he did produce a number less known gems.

One of my favourites is Travels with Charley. He tells the story of how, in 1960 he set out on one of the first camper vans to discover America with his poodle Charley, covering ten thousand miles in three months.

Steinbeck, who was the same age as myself at the time, felt that America was changing so quickly that he had to document it before it was unrecognisable. A great read.

........now I wonder how much would it cost to get The Wonder Dog across the Atlantic.
