What do you see?
Thank you for all the appreciation shown to yesterday's beautiful reflective moment in Langdale, I'm very chuffed with the response.
Today we stayed a little closer to home, in the midst of tax return fun we went for a wander up on't fell. I'll often hear the cement works at Shap called a blot or blight on the landscape, more often than not by people who only ever really whizz past on that great Northern artery the M6.
Not for a moment would I suggest it's of any aesthetic merit, but I think it's a good example of choice. In a vista that stretches to the horizon for 360° a simple turn of the head in any direction offers so much more that could focus the eye, lift one's spirit or be worthy of praise. The distant Lakeland hills to the West, The Pennine ridge to the East, Howgills South and the expanse of Eden to the North.
But let's look at the Works itself. What do you see?
I see an admittedly personal link to my first 'real' job testing concrete plants around the North West, I see a source of well paid employment for locals (& trust me Shap needs that), I see a necessity of modern life hidden in the most part from the masses, and on a day like today I see a pretty good wind indicator.
But most days? Most days I just see two inquisitive sheep loose in the big beautiful world. Like I say, it's all a matter of choice.
