Clinging on by its roots

I came across this tree on a path alongside the Yorkshire showground today. It looks like it started life as a seedling on top of these rocks, and has subsequently put down roots into firm ground below, and now the rock is completely encased in tree roots. Another possibility is that the earth has been washed away from the roots.
It makes an interesting snap anyway.
