"Large flower"
Magnolia grandiflora is well named - the flowers are indeed huge! (Maybe "magnolia hugeiflora" would be a better name!) Usually the flowers are at the top of the tree and unreachable but this one appeared low down. The leaves are beautifully glossy.
These trees are usually found against the walls of stately homes. Our home is anything but stately! My in-laws bought the magnolia for us when we moved into the house thinking it was the smaller spring flowering variety. They would be so surprised if they could see it now, forty years on, standing at least twenty feet tall! It is not against a wall, but free standing in a sheltered position.
