Twelfth night?

Even the for-the-most-part trustworthy Wikipedia is a little vague on Twelfth Night, suggesting - somewhat unhelpfully - that it is either the 5th or 6th of January depending on when you take the first day to be. Thanks for that.

Either way, though, I'm on firm ground having the Christmas lights on for one last evening although, despite the superstitions of bad luck to follow, I won't be able to take everything down until the weekend. 

Twelfth is an absurd word, isn't it? The spelling, I mean. In the unlikely event that I'm ever in another spelling bee - I have taken part in precisely one - I think that might be my Waterloo. (The spelling bee in question was in Hong Kong, when I was at primary school. I came second after confidently spelling potato with a superfluous 'e'. I'm still kicking myself 42 years later.)
