Sara
Sara (and her husband Nicola) moved from Italy to Brazil four years ago. Together with a Italian business partner, they opened a gellataria in a new shopping mall here in our town. But soon they began suspecting that their business partner was using their ice cream shop to launder money. The monthly business reports simply didn't add up. Even running the risk of losing all the money they invested into their business, they decided to get out of it as fast as possible. A few month later they opened their own gellataria downtown.
We first met them outside the shopping mall, when we saw how they picked up a dog from a nearby street. The dog was visibly in a very bad state, and so we drove up to them and asked if we could help. That's how we discovered that Sara and Nicola run an organization that rescues dogs, giving them medical care and finding a new home for them. Up to now, they have successfully saved the lives of 40 dogs with the help a lovely couple of veterinarians who offer them special rates (basically, they only charge them the medication).
They live in a small apartment right above their little shop (best ice cream in town!) with something between five to eight dogs, depending on how long it takes them to find a new home for their protegées.
