Today is The Epiphany, or, for some, it was yesterday. Then again, for some others Christmas is in a couple of weeks. But for most in this part of the world today is the Epiphany.
It's also known as Theophany or Three Kings' Day, a day that celebrates the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. We celebrate the visit of the Magi to the Christ child, and Jesus' physical manifestation. It's also linked to the revelation at Jesus' baptism and at the marriage at Cana.
We remember gifts and some follow the tradition of chalking the door. Take chalk and write 20 + C+M + B + 17 above the entrance to your home. The letters have two meanings. First, they represent the initials of the Magi, Caspar, Malchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat: “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross, and the “20” at the beginning and the “17” at the end mark the year.
