She took a flexi day off (but didn;t tell anyone), so - armed with cheese and pickle sandwiches and a flask of lentil soup we met at 0900 at the station. We bought tickets and boarded a train to Linlithgow to pick up the John Muir Way. (Previously we'd started at Dunbar and over 5 days have slowly wound our way to Linlithgow last October.)
A grey day, but no rain as we marched westwards along the main strip through town and as the houses ended, we turned left under the railway arches and followed the Avon SW. Peaceful. Nothing much much to hear bar the gentle burble of water.
And! As we walked, I said it looked like prime kingfisher country; gentle rapids with overhanging trees - three minutes later? A kingfisher. We watched it zip about for a good five minutes; dart from branch to branch; watching / waiting / moving. Vivid blue whirring delight. We eventually managed to drag ourselves away, huge grins across our faces.
And up to join the Union Canal and onwards to Polmont; very little excitement. Then a more urban stretch - some nice Thirdman / Billboard shots and before we got to Hallglen - a place I want to photograph - the path heads north to Callendar House and the parkland there. And a little under 3 hours in, we hit Falkirk High; our 10 miles done.
A decent walk; a training run for bigger treks later in the year, but we're in decent nick. Keep this up and increasing the mileage and I think C2C will be fine.
A train back; cycled to mine for a few hours - peace and quiet. Aaaah.
I dropped her and her shopping home; before constructing a pearl barley / bulghar wheat / pistachio / orange / rocket salad to go with a tuna steak. Oh. And there's football on TV...
Cigs can wait until tomorrow.
