Home Defences

Went for a walk today with Ziberoonie.  We had waited for a day with an early low water to scramble round below Houton Head to the old gun battery and searchlight emplacement.  It took us quite a while to get round on the slippy rocks.  The only items of note on the way were a huge matted coconut and two large mermaid’s purses.

The various buildings at the battery are still in relatively good order.  It was a cold south east wind first thing and this would have been a draughty posting.  Between this point an anti-submarine net was held in place which ran across to Scad on Hoy.  Contrary to local rumour there was no sign of Herr Hitler’s passport.

Dancing is back on tonight (I knew you’d all be thrilled).  Both CMC’s Mum and my Mum can remember clearly what they were doing on VE night.
