Living with predators

This scrub turkey had made a huge mound out of leaf mould . Eggs are laid within the mound and he ensures that it is kept at a constant 33 degrees for the incubation . Special heat sensors lie in their upper bill to determine if some leaves need to be removed to reduce the temperature , as he is doing here , or vice versa . Unfortunately many predators mean that the young survival rate is very low . Here a juvenile butcher bird is perched on a branch above the nest already waiting for the hatchlings . [ x tra ]
We have the least possible impact , just pass by quietly on our way for a swim ......
