Food Fight! At the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet
I looked out the window earlier today to see the bird feeder swarmed, and birds sitting in a nearby oak as well as flying about. We had our resident Oregon Juncos, Black-Capped Chickadees, a smattering of Red Breasted Nuthatches and a few Rufous sided Towhees. Added to this group was an unusual, large contingent of House or Purple finches. I went out and filled the feeder twice, as well as making up a batch of suet cakes with peanut butter, dried fruit, sunflower seeds and millet. Temps dropping, it was 21 F earlier and now in early evening it is 16 F, with a bitter east wind. I admire those tiny birds who can live in and survive these winter temperatures!
