Rum Business
Taken on a day out in Whitehaven, Cumbria with the family we stumbled upon the RUM MUSEUM!!! This picture shows the Jefferson Office - no doubt used for some very dodgy dealings indeed......
"The Jefferson family were an important wine and spirit merchant in Whitehaven, but also had interests in shipbuilding and railway development.
Their partnership with the Lumley Kennedy and Co Shipbuilding Company enabled the Jefferson's to transport sugar from their Yeaman estate in Antigua, rum and molasses from the West Indies as well as wine from Portugal and Spain on their twelve vessels."
No mention above of the slave trade - Whitehaven no doubt would have been awash with slaves and a whole lot of rum. Must have been interesting times.
My wife's great great grandparents used to smuggle rum over the hills in Cumbria - might be why my daughter has a great fondness for it!
Happy weekend all
