The late bird catches the worm?
Out for my daily run, I came across this bird's egg beneath some trees on the Wetherby Road, Harrogate. It hadn't been there earlier and, still sticky inside, it seems that a hatchling emerged just today.
Popping it in a 'poo-poo bag' (I always take one of the dogs with me), I decided that it would be my blipfoto entry for today.
Although quite a keen birdwatcher, I'm not an eggspert, so don't know what type this is. I imagine it's from a song/garden/hedge species, though.
What strikes me is that late August is terribly late in the year for hatchlings to emerge. Were they forestalled by the summer's earlier bad weather - or has it been such a good year that this is a second or even third brood?
And what chance have the youngsters of surviving winter?
