Loonies!!
The Portobello Loony Doukers charge across the sand towards the sea for their traditional New Year's Day plunge. Very much an unofficial, community event, unlike the rather corporate and commercialised one at South Queensferry that is part of the Edinburgh New Year. Of course even that one, that has been going thirty years, is a bit of a new thing compared to the annual New Year's Day dip that they have been doing in Broughty Ferry every year since 1891. Our New Year's Day started on the beach, amidst the bonfires and the fireworks, before heading up to the Skylark for a couple of drinks and then back to K's where L played us a few tunes on her guitar and the rest of us joined in with the words courtesy of our old Fountainbridge/Tollcross Labour Party song books. After photographing the Douk I joined the others at the Skylark again for a restorative brunch and then we had a short cycle up and down the Prom to blow away the cobwebs. Back to the flat to watch Strictly Ballroom on TV.
