the birds
'Iwas the night before New Years,
And all 'round the bird feeder,
Not a tree was stirring,
Not even a yellow cedar.
The paintings were hung by the
Woodstove with care,
In hopes that more art work
Would soon be there.
The birds were cozy and snug in their nests,
While visions of millet seed danced in their heads.
The squirrel with its fur coat, the quail with its crest,
Had just settled down for a long winter's rest
When out of the back porch there emerged a de Brée,
With plenty of bird seed for New Year's Day.
