Another Green Soldier Fly

This soldier fly, of the Stratiomyid family, is different from the green soldier fly of the Beris species, though they are about the same size of 9 or 10mm. They are both NZ natives. This one has a brown thorax, with green on the face and abdomen. It also has bright green halteres. I’m fascinated by the horizontal line across the eye, which is not clear in this shot. It has a huge proboscis, which it uses to suck nectar from carrot flowers.

Today was sunny and warm- a real treat, though the temperature was a very unsummery 4º when I got up this morning.
