A pale sun setting

After some mundane activities today, such as getting air put in my car tires, the afternoon was winding down when I saw the sun begin setting behind naked trees in the distance.  It was about two hours before actual sunset, and the pale brightness of the sun lit up the branches and caused a layered look in the clouds.  The sky had been overcast for hours by then, so the sun came as a surprise.
